Hello guys,
If you belong to the mechanical engineering background, then you might have read about the Mechanisms right?
There are lot's of Mechanisms like:
- Quick return mechanism
- Single slider crank mechanism
- 4 bar chain mechanism and much more!
Today we will learn about Geneva Mechanism. And also we will see the use of this mechanism in a paper cutting machine.
Geneva mechanism: The Geneva mechanism is also known as Maltese cross mechanism. This mechanism is used to convert the continuous rotatory motion into an intermittent rotatory motion as shown in the video.
The driving wheel has a pin which will reach to the slot which is cut on the driven wheel.
The above figure shows the theoretical arrangement of the

There are basically three types of Geneva motion mechanism,
- External motion
- Internal motion
- Spherical motion
The spherical Geneva motion is rarely used. The next figure is showing the Internal "Geneva Mechanism"
Application of Geneva Mechanism:
- Production industry and automobile industry for mass production
- Used in CNC Machines for tool changing
- Great scope in automatic industry

Thanks for reading!
