Study hard and Knowing the answer only is not enough for scoring high marks in the exam. You will also have to ensure that you have written your answers in an appropriate way and in the desired format to the answer sheet elevator.Paper |
It is the matter of fact that only less than 5 per cent students are able to score 99% if they even get the question paper before the exam. It is not because 95% students will not be able to mug up and write the answer, But they really do not know how to write the perfect answer to score 100%. There is a difference not much in their knowledge who score 90+ and those who score 99+ but in their answer sheet representation.
In this post, we will learn how can we write really long answers in the exam. It will be applicable to the board's exam, semester or university exam as well. So, let's get started:
- Tip#1. Understand the depth of the question:
Usually, long answer questions are based on the basic and overall idea any topic in which you can easily write up to three pages and even more if you follow the right approach. Most of the students are so hurry in the examination hall, that once they read the question, they start running their pen like a horse and get stuck in the middle of the answer. They usually out of content after writing half of the answer to a long answer.
So, you should read and understand the question and the possible content of the answer before actually start writing. You can also make a rough note of points you are going to consider in your answer so that you can rearrange them at the answer sheet. It will make your answer sheet more beautiful and correct.
For example- Explain global warming in 200 words. If you try to understand the depth of the question, you will find that you can write about following things in your answer and make your answer really big.
For example- Explain global warming in 200 words. If you try to understand the depth of the question, you will find that you can write about following things in your answer and make your answer really big.
- What is global warming? Definition.
- Consequences of global warming.
- Cause of global warming.
- Remedies/ How to stop global warming.
- How it is affecting life and earth.
- What are the scientific facts related to the global warming?
- What are the myths of the global warming?
- The areas which are more in danger currently.
- The live examples of the global warming.
- What government are taking steps to reduce global warming.? and so on.
- Tip#2. Know the word limit you have to reach:
I have seen many of my friends doing the same mistake again and again. They are only mean to write an answer and fill up the sheet. So, once they start writing an answer, they do not stop before writing for three pages if the answer is of at least 10 marks. And in this race, they write so many unwanted contents which is not even asked in the question, which is a bad sign to the examiner. Writing two pages are more than enough for the board exam and you can write a little bit more if you are in university.
The best way is to go with the word limits indicated either in the starting of the paper or at the section of the question. It will give you a proper idea of how much you actually need to write.
- Tip# 3. Make diagrams and label them correctly and smartly:
This is a secret of the topper to score more. When you are writing a long answer and especially when you have less to write, you can compensate it with your diagram. You can make your diagrams in half of your page.
You can also make small diagrams of the terms you are explaining in your answer at the right of the sheet and write in the left part. Making diagrams usually gets you half of the marks already and leaves a good impact on the examiner. But do not forget to label it correctly. And leave the part to the label in which you are not confident in. Afterall writing less is better than writing wrong.
- Tip# 4. Try to put some examples, to your answers:
Examples are the things which make your answer look more practical and applicable. It's like adding life a once body when you add few examples in the long answers. Also, it is a good way to increase the number of words of your answer so that you could easily reach the word limit for that specific questions.
Also, examples are the things which are easy to remember. You should remember and write examples if possible in your answer to make it big and effective.
- Tip# 5. Structure your answer before writing:
Most of the students are meant to just filling their answer sheets and as a result, they end up with below 60-65 percents marks only. One of the big reason behind this is the structure of your answer.
You should first analyze that "What portion of your answer you would write first and what next?"
For example- Question: Write about the thermal pollution in brief.
You can arrange your answer in the following manner:
- Definition of the thermal pollution.
- Examples of the activities which produces thermal pollution.
- Causes of thermal pollution.
- Consequences of thermal pollution on life and environment.
- How to reduce thermal pollution.
- Tip# 6. Write in key points and explain them rather writing the only paragraph:
Writing your answer in points and explaining them is a universal technique of writing long answer. like in above question, you can write the answer in points as:
- Causes of Global warming
- Industrial cause
- Domestic cause
- Due to transportation and so on..
The above are the examples of the points you can make in your answer and explain them in your answer. It will help you to write more and more content very easily.
If you think that that particular point is not so related to the question, do not write more than 2 or 3 lines about it.
- Tip# 7. Try to not write more than 6 lines per paragraph:
We have to write more than 2 or sometimes even 3 pages for the long answer question, hence it is very necessary to make our answer sheet look good so that it creates a good impact on the examiner. Also, you have to make sure that what you write in your answer should be easily visible to the examiner so that he could give you a good mark.
When someone writes a big paragraph of supposing 10 lines and more, it looks very boring. And no one is willing to read the whole paragraph. And this results in the average marking of that answer sheet in spite of writing good content.
If examiner will not read your answer, how will he give you good marks?
- Tip# 8. Importance of underlining key points:
As I mentioned earlier, It is important to ensure that whatever you write, should be easily accessible and understandable to the examiner right? Also, In long answer, Hardly few teachers read all your answers line by line!
So, if you have written some really good content in your answer and you want to get marks for that, Underlining is the best way of drawing attention to that point.
Ideally, you should underline your examples, data or numerical figures, some facts etc. Do not bother to underline those things which you are not confident in that they are correct or not.
- Tip# 9. Avoid repetition of words:
You have to write more, it does not mean that you will write similar points in your answer again and again. This is a very bad way to fill your answer sheet. It leaves a bad impact on the examiner.
Yet, if you have not any choice, then you should attempt these questions in the last when you have done all the easy questions. Cause at this point of time, the would have already given the marks for the good answers.
- Tip# 10. Write with at least two colour pens:
You can use even three if you want. It helps to easily recognize the headings, subheadings, the contents and the underlining also. It makes your answer sheet more beautiful and more examiner friendly.
- Tip# 11. Also write advantages, disadvantages, and application if possible:
As discussed in the first point "understand the depth of the question" If you are struggling with finding the contents of the answer of a question, you can add the above things in your answer. Although it is expected by the teacher and really makes a difference in your answer.
It will make your long question-answer little longer as well.
- Tip# 12. Also, mention some data and numerical values:
This is the major difference between the answer sheet of a topper and average students. The average students write only what is asked in the question, which is a good thing. However, writing some interesting facts, data, scientific experimental data etc is also expected from the teacher as a perfect answer. After all, everything cannot be written in the question as it is only of two to three lines.
Also, do not forget to underline those data in your answer with a different colour to make it easily visible to the examiner. It will make your answer unique and beautiful.
- Tip# 13. Do not write contractions in your answers:
We all use social media daily right? Some of the students like to chat late night and type very fast.
This gives rise to the contraction. Although it saves time, it leaves a very bad impact on the examiner if you use contraction words. Use full proper words, it will also increase the number of words in your answers.
