How to remember multiple subject |
In most of the competitive exams like IIT JEE, SSC, Polytechnic etc, The toughness of the questions is not only the problem, however, most of the students are not able to qualify these exams because they are not able to remember such large information of concepts, formula and recall it in the exam hall for solving the problem.
The main reason behind this is the bad revision strategy. There are some scientific ways which you can apply to revise things which may help you dramatically. However I can not guarantee of remembering 100% of what you read, but you will be definitely able to remember 50% more than you do now!
If you also want to keep remember multiple subjects for your competitive exam, then this post might help you. I will tell you some of the methods and do's and don'ts which you can apply in your study. So let's get started.
Do not forget to tell me that what is the biggest difficulty you feel in the study? and also that how you like the post in the comment box. You can also suggest me the new topic of your interest. Share this post to your friends and family who need this. And Finally, thanks for reading.
- Revision Interval(forgetting curve)
Now many students try to find out that how many times he/she should revise things for competitive exam. According to the forgetting curve(memory retention time), we forget around 35% of what we remember in just after 9 to 10 hours.
If you want to remember things for long, You should revise at least three to four times in this manner:
Once just after you learn things
Once after one day
Once after a week
And once after almost one or two months.
If you will revise in this manner, then your retention capacity will increase very high. Then you will have to just see the things before the exam.
This revision interval should be applied to all of your subjects so that once you revise it properly, it should be fitted in your mind.
This revision interval should be applied to all of your subjects so that once you revise it properly, it should be fitted in your mind.
- Study/Revision Style: Studies say that how much you will remember, It depends upon the style of study and the way you gather information. for example:
10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss with others
80% of what we personally experience
95% or what we teach others
Most of us know these things but do not apply to the study. Most of the students study only by reading the textbooks and the notes which is not really a good idea.
You should change your study style continuously from reading to watching video lectures, discussing with your friends, and visualizing as well as applying into your daily life if possible. If you can teach someone after learning, then it will be the best way to remember for really a long time.
- Create environment like exam hall: Now what happens generally is, we sometimes are able to remember all stuff but when we sit for the exams, then it becomes very hard to recall those formulas and concept.
Now there may be many psychological reasons for this like stress and anxiety etc, but the good news is- This can be removed by creating some mental conditions like an exam. All the topper give tests series for this purpose.
You can simply join an online test series for your exam. Or Download a question paper from the Internet of your exam and sit at some quite in your home where no one will disturb you, then set the timer of 3 hrs in your phone(put the phone in the airplane mode) and start solving the question paper.
This will not be 100% like your exam, however, your mind will be trained for handling such kind of environment and recall the information from your mind.
You should take at least two test a week. You can take the unit test and subject wise test if necessary for the clarity of the difficult chapters and some concepts.
- Study At least two to three subjects a day: I have seen many students who keep on studying only one subject like mathematics or physics for weeks cause they like those subjects or they are good in those subjects.
If you are also one of those, then you should keep in mind that examiner is not going to set the question paper on your favorite subject. If you have to score well in the exam, then you will have to study all subjects.
The smart way of giving time is on the basis of the syllabus and the mark. Suppose physics, chemistry will carry 25% of the exams then you should give time accordingly.
Suppose mathematics also carry the 25% marks however the syllabus of maths is wide, then obviously you will have to give little more time to the mathematics than the physics and chemistry.
Now to keep the flexibility of the subjects, to prevent your mind from becoming bored and to train your mind to remember multiple subject information you must read at least two or more than two subjects every day. You should divide your study time for your subjects according to the time, marks and syllabus
- Short notes: This is similar to your regular notes. But the only difference is- it is almost 1/10 times of your notes. I tell you some tips which will make our short notes more beautiful, useful and effective:
It should not be more than 10 pages.
Mention only important concepts and difficult formula in your short note.
Make pdf copy of your short note and put it on your phone.
You can make a short note at last of your notebook or make a separate notebook according to your convenience but I will suggest you make a separate copy for all subject short note in a single copy.
- Random Memory test: I call it random memory test because this is similar to the surprise test which we use to give in school however it is not exactly like that.
In this you will have to try to recall some formula and concepts even you are not studying. Usually the topper students when do not study, they keep on thinking about the doubts and try to recall things anywhere and anytime.
This does not mean every time of course. However when you are alone in party, travelling, and when you do not have anything else to do, then you can try to recall things what you have read throughout whole day. And in case you are not able to recall that then you can take a look in your phone to the PDF which you have created of your short note. see how to make PDF of your notes.
This method is really helpful when you have to remember a large information.
- Understand what is important and what not by researching question paper: If two person gives you their phone number and suppose one is your class mate and other is the girl whom you like the most. What do you think that after one week whose number will be remembered to you?
A normal person will remember girl's number very easily right? This is because you brain is very good to remember important stuffs which are very useful.
You can apply this concepts in your study. You have to tell your mind that what is important more and what not. And for that you have to do research on the internet and talk to your seniors and teachers.
Note- this strongly does not mean that you should study only important, but if you have to score high then you must study every thing, However I will suggest you to read important things first.
- Do not study from anywhere: If you are studying so hard then it is necessary to ensure that what you study, that should be absolutely correct. If it is not so, then a lot of confusion in the mind.
Also ensure that you study from a good teacher who is capable of teaching you. It will save your time and hard work both.
If you do not have any option, then you can take help from YouTube, however the selection of right lecture is advisable.
These above are some tips which you can apply to remember multiple subjects for your competitive exams as
well as recall them in exam hall to save time. It will increase your retaining capacity more than 50-6o% and even more for some students.
Except these, you should also apply some memory techniques so that what you remember, you could remember that easily. There are some memory techniques to remember the series, patterns etc like the " memory palace method, Mnemonics, Association method.
In some next article I will be telling you these techniques in detail. If you do not want to miss the next article, then you can follow/subscribe this blog for new ideas about the study.
