Answer Sheet Representation in Exams

Exam tips

Almost all student will agree that representation of your answers in exam matters a lot. Especially when you are preparing for the exam where it is difficult to see your copy like Board exams, University exam or any other because you will not be able to ask the answer sheet evaluator that why have you given such low marks? By the way, you can apply these points which I am going to tell you in any written(subjective) exam!

Why representation is so important? Are you also getting low marks in spite of attempting almost all questions?

Most of the senior teachers who check the copy of board exams, university exams or equivalent exam, Many times they don't even bother to read your answer that what have you actually written if your representation and handwriting is bad. This results in very average marking in spite of writing all correct answers And then marks comes around 45/100, and 68/100. No matter how correct you have written. So in the exam, it is impossible to judge you without reading your contents right?

you have to impress your evaluator with your writing and your representation so that he feels no difficulties to read your answers and judge you easily. And today we will tell you some important tips which may help you with this problem.

#1.Leave proper white space in your writing:

In spite of having a good handwriting, there are few students who don't leave spaces between words which is very important. Usually, you should write only five to six words. Also, keep in mind not to leave more than required spaces which will also give a bad impact.

#2.Make diagrams with a pencil:

Diagrams plays an important role to enhance the presentation of your answer sheet. You have already scored half of the marks if you have drawn the diagram. you will definitely get more marks if you draw the diagrams with pencil and label it properly.

#3.Make diagrams on the right side of your copy:

Generally, you can make diagrams in the middle of your copy but if you have noticed that all the diagrams in the textbooks are always right side. So if you have a small figure, the try to make it on the right side and start writing from the left side.

#4.Don't write too small:

We certainly do not know that who will check our answer sheet right? So in case, you write too small and the evaluator is having difficulties then he might not appreciate it. So always try and make a habit of writing average sized letters.

#5.Draw a line after finishing an answer:

It is very important to separate one answer with the other one because sometimes the consecutive questions are similar in context. So, Always leave one or two lines and draw a line after finishing one answer.

#6.Give headings and subheadings carefully:

Depending upon the type of question and marking scheme it is very important to mention all headings and subheadings properly because sometimes evaluators seek for only headings and subheadings, this is may be due to less time. So always mention the headings before explaining an answer.

#7. Try to write pointwise for questions like "Advantages, disadvantages, applications, working etc":

For some type of certain questions, you are not supposed to describe things rather than be specific and write in points. for example, if you have to answer a 3 marks question about advantages/disadvantage then you should write almost 5 to 7 points for that particular things.

#8.Do not forget to label your diagrams:

Labeling your diagram is that important as making the diagrams because it reflects that you understand things you have described. Making diagrams without labeling leaves a negative impact on the examiner.

#9.Leave one or two lines before starting another question:

To look a clean and good representation you should always leave one or two lines before starting a new question.

#10.Use at least two color pens in the exam:

It is very difficult to differentiate the headings and subheading if you use only one color pen. So always use two or more color pens in your exams. It will also make your copy beautiful from other copies and leave a good impact on the evaluator.

#11.Most important- Avoid mistakes in at least first four pages of your copy:

This is a secret of getting very high marks in exams such as 95+. As examiner will check your first 3 to 4 pages very carefully, just to get an idea about your intelligence and excellence. If you will be able to avoid mistakes and impress your evaluator in first 3 to 4 pages then he will certainly be lenient in checking your next answer keeping in mind that this student must be intelligent.

#12. *Start with a new page for next question:

In case you finish an answer and there are only a few lines left. In that case, you must start on the next page for the next question.

#13.Do not overwrite more/ Avoid unnecessary cutting(cut in a better way):

As it is very obvious that no one like cutting and overwriting, but for certain reason, we have to do that. But there are some tips by which you can cut your mistakes in a better way not affecting your representation.

#14. Special representation for "few questions":

Always there are some different types of questions which are supposed to be explained in the respective manners. for example, if the difference is asked in the question, then you should not write the difference in paragraphs. So always take care of the type of question asked before giving the answer.

  1. Difference: Divide your page vertically and then write in points
  2. Types and classifications: Draw classification diagram first to give a quick view.
  3. Characteristics and graphs: There must be graphs made by pencil properly.
  4. Tables/line diagrams/box diagrams- Prefer to make it by pencil, however, if you do not have much time, you can make it using a pen as well. There is no negative marking for using a pen, just try to avoid mistakes and overwriting.
  5. Flow charts: Explained in the sequences one after another. Represented by diagram first then explain in detail.

#15. Write interesting questions in your headings to draw attention:

Make your headings interesting by putting interesting questions like- why is this necessary. what is the need for modification? what is the possible reason for failures etc.

#16. Always analyze your answer sheets after being checked(if you can see that):

In exams like an internal exam, assessment exam, unit test or class test, we get chances to see our copy. So always analyze your copy and ask your teacher if you get low marks on any questions about what improvement should be done in that!

#17.Always take care of marking scheme of individual questions before writing:

You don't need to write 3 pages for a 5 marks questions and not one page for a 10 marks question. So always take care of the marking scheme of all the questions. Normally it is given to the question that is how many words you have to answer. But if not mentioned then you can discuss your teacher because depending on the standard, it may differ.

#18.Do not forget to underline important information:

If you think you have written something really good, like some data or example, then you must underline that sentence.  Underlining your content draws the attention of the evaluator and he quickly understands that you have sufficient knowledge about the topic.

#19.Always try to add some factual data/values to your answer to make your answer more effective:

Adding some experimental data, numerical values and other data is a very good habit because only a few students are able to do that. If you remember any experimental data/values related to your answer then you must mention in your answer and underline it. It will certainly create a strong impact on the evaluator. This is also an important step in order to get full marks!
Personal Hints: If you have doubt in particular type question, then please do ask your teacher that how to represent that answer.
